Defining an Optimal Cut-Point Value in ROC Analysis: An Alternative Approach
نویسنده
چکیده
ROC curve analysis is often applied to measure the diagnostic accuracy of a biomarker. The analysis results in two gains: diagnostic accuracy of the biomarker and the optimal cut-point value. There are many methods proposed in the literature to obtain the optimal cut-point value. In this study, a new approach, alternative to these methods, is proposed. The proposed approach is based on the value of the area under the ROC curve. This method defines the optimal cut-point value as the value whose sensitivity and specificity are the closest to the value of the area under the ROC curve and the absolute value of the difference between the sensitivity and specificity values is minimum. This approach is very practical. In this study, the results of the proposed method are compared with those of the standard approaches, by using simulated data with different distribution and homogeneity conditions as well as a real data. According to the simulation results, the use of the proposed method is advised for finding the true cut-point.

Finding an Appropriate Cut-off Point for Neck Circumference to Determine Overweight and Obesity in a Large Sample of Iranian Adults
Objective: Obesity is a major public health concern and there are different ways to detect it in population. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the neck circumference (NC) in a simple and practical way. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional survey utilized data from the Yazd Health Study (YaHS) which is a population-based cohort study. In brief, 9962 individuals aged 20-70 years...
متن کاملDiagnosis of Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia with Reticulocyte Hemoglobin Content among Children Aged 6-18 Years
Background: Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common micronutrient deficiency in the world. If left untreated, ID will lead to iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and other irreversible consequences. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommended reticulocyte hemoglobin content (Ret-He) as an alternative laboratory examination to screen and detect ID. We aimed to compare Ret-He with other laboratory pa...
متن کاملApplication of adjusted-receiver operating characteristic curve analysis in combination of biomarkers for early detection of gestational diabetes mellitus
Introduction: In medical diagnostic field, evaluation of diagnostic accuracy of biomarkers or tests has always been a matter of concern. In some situations, one biomarker alone may not be sufficiently sensitive and specific for prediction of a disease. However, combining multiple biomarkers may lead to better diagnostic. The aim of this study was to assess the performance of combination of bio...
متن کاملبررسی مقایسهای ارزش تشخیصی سیستاتین C و کراتینین سرمی در ارزیابی عملکرد کلیه پیوندی در بیماران گیرنده کلیه در دوران اولیه پس از پیوند
Background &Aim: Early detection of decreasing glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is critical to prevent graft rejection in post-transplantation period. Serum creatinine has several drawbacks as a marker of GFR, so serum cystatin C has been proposed as an alternative GFR marker. Thus, we prospectively evaluated the diagnostic value of cystatin C measurements compared with serum creatinine in t...
متن کاملFinding the optimal cut-point for Gaussian and Gamma distributed biomarkers
Categorization is often needed for clinical decision making when dealing with diagnostic (prognostic) biomarkers and a binary outcome (true disease status). Four commonmethods used to dichotomize a continuous biomarker X are compared: the minimum P-value, the Youden index, the concordance probability and the point closest-to-(0, 1) corner in the ROC plane. These methods are compared from a theo...
